“I am drawn to the mystery and often hidden, almost microscopic beauty of nature—its textures, colors, and patterns that reveal connections to otherworldly realms.”

David “Buzz” Baldwin

Artist Statement

My work explores the intertwined realms of nature, flora, history, and the human form—each filtered through the lens of abstraction. I strive to create pieces alive with curiosity and layered meaning.

Growing up on a farm and spending my career as a landscape architect have instilled in me a deep reverence for the natural world. This lifelong connection to flora continues to inspire and ground my practice.

Color is my language; texture and mark-making are its inflections. Through abstract underpainting, textured canvases, inks, stenciled spray paint, and spontaneous gestures, I build surfaces that invite both visual and tactile exploration. Each work becomes a dialogue between structure and spontaneity, realism and abstraction—a reflection of nature’s own balance between chaos and order.

“My paintings uncover the intricate layers of the natural world, transforming subtle details into visions that bridge the real and the imagined.”

Bio

Growing up on a farm outside a small town in central Pennsylvania sparked Buzz Baldwin’s lifelong connection to nature—a connection that would shape both his professional life as a landscape architect and his creative journey as an artist.

Although neither of his parents were farmers—his father a dentist, his mother a nurse—they believed in the value of rural life and the lessons it offered. Buzz fondly recalls helping his father in the garden, where he first witnessed the quiet magic of growth—seeds sprouting, blossoms forming, fruit ripening—and spending hours exploring the fields and woods of their 72-acre property. These early experiences fostered his enduring fascination with the natural world.

Encouraged by his parents, Buzz began developing his artistic interests at an early age. At nine, he took oil painting and ceramics classes from a local art teacher, nurturing an early love for creative expression. Though he set art aside during his formative years, the pull of drawing and design would later resurface in unexpected ways.

Unsure of his path after high school, Buzz enrolled at a small college in Pennsylvania to study Ornamental Horticulture. Two years later, he discovered the field of Landscape Architecture—a discipline that perfectly married his appreciation for plants with his aptitude for design and drawing. Eager to pursue this newfound passion, he packed up his 1964 Volkswagen Beetle and drove south to Louisiana State University, where he earned his professional degree in Landscape Architecture.

“Inspired by nature, flora, history, and the human form, I use abstraction to weave visual narratives rich with depth, emotion, and intrigue.”

In 1976, Buzz moved to Texas, working for several firms before founding his own practice in 1984. Over the next 35 years, his firm became known for its creative design of parks, master-planned communities, and large-scale public spaces. His approach to landscape architecture was always grounded in the belief that it is, at its core, an art form—an interplay of function, composition, texture, and emotion. Every project reflected the principles of design: the thoughtful placement of elements, the harmony of color and material, and the creation of atmosphere through light and form.

After decades devoted to his profession, Buzz returned to painting in 2007—picking up a brush for the first time in nearly 45 years. The rekindling of this passion grew alongside the winding down of his career, and in 2020, he sold his firm to a large multidisciplinary company, allowing him to focus fully on art.

Buzz’s paintings often begin with an idea sparked by a place, a memory, or even the lyrics of a song. While he has created both realistic and landscape works, his current voice can best be described as abstract realism—a synthesis of recognizable forms and abstract elements. His mixed-media process often begins with expressive underpaintings made with inks, charcoal, markers, spray paint, and stencils, layered with oil paints to bring color, depth, and emotion to the final composition.

From his light-filled home studio overlooking a wooded greenbelt in suburban Dallas, Buzz draws constant inspiration from the shifting seasons, the textures of nature, and the rhythms of music—an ever-present companion as he paints.

Whether exploring flora, landscapes, or the human form, Buzz seeks to express the harmony and mystery of the natural world, guided by a sense of wonder and gratitude for the beauty of God’s creation. He and his wife, Jan, continue to travel widely, gathering inspiration and imagery from the many beautiful places they visit—each journey adding new layers to his evolving artistic vision.
